In the comic books, she was initially a rival for Natasha. In fact, after Yelena’s training in the Red Room, she was sent on a mission to kill the reigning Black Widow. (Because Natasha wasn’t toeing the company line, the company–Russia–wanted a new Black Widow.) Instead, Natasha was able to win over her young rival. She showed her that life as a company gal implied she was disposable.

How Yelena will push The story Forward

In an interview with empire magazine, Black Widow director Cate Shortland revealed some interesting details. First, she discussed the film’s story. As she told the magazine, marvel president Kevin Feige “realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction.” What that implies is that instead of showing the making of Natasha as Black Widow, the motion picture will show her as we already know her. Specifically, the film will take place just after Captain America: Civil War.

Shortland also said, “And we didn’t know how terrific Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.” While that could refer to a future Yelena as Black Widow story, some folks have other ideas.

Last year, for instance, Kevin Feige confirmed that another Avengers story is coming. It’s not a big leap, then, to assume that Black Widow Yelena will take her surrogate sister’s place as an Avenger. She could join other possible new Avengers like Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, who was seen in The Falcon and the winter season Soldier production. Or Natalie Portman as the new female Thor. As Feige told MTV, the new Avengers will be “a very different team than we’ve seen before…with some people you’ve already met and some people you haven’t met yet.”

And hopefully, we’ll get to meet Yelena, this time for real, when Black Widow opens this fall. It’s scheduled for November 6 in the United States. let us have this, miss ‘Rona.
